Dubrovnik Showcased Across Europe for Sustainable Tourism Success
Dubrovnik has once again attracted international attention, this time as a leading example of sustainable tourism management.
Mayor Mato Franković recently spoke with ARTE TV, one of Europe's leading public broadcasters, for a documentary examining overtourism and how destinations across the continent are responding to growing visitor numbers.
During the interview, Franković highlighted Dubrovnik's internationally recognised Respect the City programme, explaining how measures to manage visitor flows, protect the UNESCO-listed Old City and improve residents' quality of life have helped create a more sustainable tourism model.
He also addressed the challenges posed by the rapid growth of short-term holiday rentals, welcoming Croatia's new legislation aimed at restoring a better balance between tourism and local housing needs.
Looking ahead, the mayor said Dubrovnik's long-term goal is to encourage more permanent residents to return to the historic centre through housing initiatives, careful urban planning and continued investment in public infrastructure.
The documentary is expected to introduce Dubrovnik's tourism management strategy to audiences across Europe, further strengthening the city's reputation as a pioneer in sustainable tourism.
