Spring in Bloom: A Perfect Digital Nomad Escape at the Dubrovnik Flower Market

Life as a digital nomad in Dubrovnik often means balancing productivity with the simple pleasures of Mediterranean living — a morning of focused work followed by a walk along the sea, a coffee on a sunny terrace, or a spontaneous cultural event. This March, the city offers yet another charming reason to step away from the laptop for a few hours.
From March 12 to 15, Dubrovnik will once again host the Dubrovnik Flower Market, a colourful celebration of flowers, gardens and nature organised by the Dubrovnik Tourist Board.
For remote workers living in the city, the event provides the perfect opportunity to experience a quieter, more local side of Dubrovnik — one filled with fragrant markets, historic gardens and creative workshops scattered across some of the city’s most beautiful locations.
A City Welcoming Spring
Dubrovnik’s relationship with gardens goes back centuries. During the Renaissance period, the city’s noble families cultivated elaborate gardens filled with citrus trees, herbs and flowers, many of which still exist today behind stone walls and historic villas.
The Dubrovnik Flower Market celebrates this tradition, bringing together local growers, gardeners and visitors for several days dedicated to nature and creativity.
The festival opens with floral design workshops at Villa Čingrija, where participants will learn how to create elegant table arrangements using fresh flowers. It’s the kind of slow, hands-on experience that feels worlds away from the pace of everyday work.
The Flower Fair in Gruž
At the heart of the event is the traditional flower fair held at Placa Gruž and the nearby Park Luja Šoletića.
Here, family farms and horticulture producers from across Croatia bring an array of flowers, vegetable seedlings and aromatic herbs. Visitors can browse stalls, chat with growers and pick up plants that carry a little piece of Dubrovnik’s spring home with them.
For digital nomads who may spend most of their day working indoors, it’s a refreshing way to reconnect with the outdoors — even if only during a lunch break.
Creativity and Nature
The program also includes creative workshops throughout the city. At the Dubrovnik Natural History Museum, children will take part in a playful workshop about spring plants, creating colourful bouquets from illustrated paper flowers.
Later in the day, visitors can join a terrarium-making workshop at the historic Lazareti Dubrovnik, designing miniature ecosystems in glass containers — part gardening, part art.
Discovering Dubrovnik’s Hidden Gardens
For those curious about the city’s past, guided walking tours titled "Through the Old Dubrovnik Gardens” will lead visitors through historic garden spaces that once surrounded aristocratic residences.
Starting from TIC Pile, the tours explore Dubrovnik’s Renaissance garden tradition and the plants that have shaped the city’s landscape for centuries.
It’s the kind of experience that reveals a softer, greener side of Dubrovnik often missed by visitors focused only on the Old City walls.
A Wild Culinary Adventure
One of the more unusual experiences offered during the festival is an excursion called "Wild Feast on Kalamota.” Participants travel by boat from Gruž to the island of Koločep, where they learn to identify and gather edible wild plants under the guidance of local experts.
The day ends with a traditional lunch at a local guesthouse — proof that nature and gastronomy often go hand in hand along the Adriatic.
Art Among the Olive Trees
The festival concludes with an artistic workshop on Lokrum, one of the most beloved green escapes just minutes from the city.
In a session called "Floral Magic Under the Olive Trees,” participants will decorate ceramic plates with floral motifs inspired by the colours and scents of the island’s gardens.
A Different Side of Dubrovnik
For digital nomads living in Dubrovnik, events like the Flower Market offer something particularly valuable: a chance to experience the city beyond tourism headlines and summer crowds.
Instead of queues and cruise ships, early spring in Dubrovnik brings quiet parks, blooming gardens and community events that celebrate the city’s deep connection to nature.
And sometimes, the perfect work-life balance isn’t found in another coworking space — it’s found wandering through a flower market with the scent of spring in the air.
