Croatia Ranks Among the World’s Best Countries for Digital Nomads in 2026
27.10.2026

Looking for your next remote-working destination? Croatia has just earned another reason to be near the top of your list, ranking seventh worldwide in a new study examining how easy it really is to live and work abroad as a digital nomad.

With its Mediterranean lifestyle, beautiful coastline, historic cities and growing remote-working community, Croatia has long been attracting location-independent professionals. Now, a new international ranking suggests that the country offers more than just an attractive backdrop for working on a laptop.

According to the Digital Nomad Friction Index 2026, published by international eSIM provider Holafly, Croatia is the seventh easiest country in the world for digital nomads, placing it among the leading destinations for remote workers.

Even more impressively, Croatia is one of just three European countries to feature in the global top ten, alongside Hungary and Portugal.

Beyond the Beach: What Makes a Country Digital Nomad-Friendly?

Anyone who has spent time working remotely abroad knows that choosing a destination involves considerably more than finding reliable Wi-Fi and a café with a sea view.

The real challenges often begin after arrival.

Can you open a local bank account? How complicated is the residence application? What about healthcare, taxes and registering your address? And how much time will you spend dealing with paperwork instead of actually working?

These were among the practical questions examined by Holafly.

The study compared 17 popular digital nomad destinations, evaluating factors such as visa requirements, bureaucracy, banking, healthcare, internet connectivity, living costs and potential disruptions.

Croatia performed particularly well, securing seventh place globally and reinforcing its reputation as an increasingly attractive destination for remote professionals.

Croatia’s Digital Nomad Residence Programme Makes a Difference

One of Croatia’s advantages is its dedicated temporary stay programme for digital nomads, designed for eligible non-EU nationals who work remotely for employers or businesses outside Croatia.

The programme provides a legal framework for remote workers who want to experience life in the country for an extended period.

However, the study also identified areas where Croatia could make the experience easier.

Administrative requirements, including residence registration and obtaining a Croatian tax identification number, can create additional steps for newcomers.

For digital nomads accustomed to moving between countries, these procedures can be frustrating, particularly when compared with destinations offering more streamlined systems.

Nevertheless, Croatia finished ahead of established remote-working destinations such as Portugal and the United Arab Emirates.

Where Does Croatia Rank Globally?

Georgia claimed first place in the Digital Nomad Friction Index 2026, thanks largely to its relatively straightforward administrative procedures.

Peru finished second, followed by South Africa, Thailand and Malaysia.

Vietnam took sixth place, immediately ahead of Croatia.

The world’s ten easiest countries for digital nomads in 2026 were:

  1. Georgia
  2. Peru
  3. South Africa
  4. Thailand
  5. Malaysia
  6. Vietnam
  7. Croatia
  8. Hungary
  9. Portugal
  10. United Arab Emirates

While the ranking focuses on administrative convenience rather than lifestyle alone, Croatia’s position demonstrates that it is becoming increasingly competitive in the international remote-working market.

Why Dubrovnik Is an Attractive Base for Remote Workers

For digital nomads considering Croatia, Dubrovnik offers a particularly appealing combination of Mediterranean living, international connections and a growing community of location-independent professionals.

Famous around the world for its UNESCO-listed Old City, Dubrovnik is also developing a reputation as somewhere visitors can stay for weeks or months rather than simply a few days.

And there is a very different side to the city beyond the busy summer tourism season.

Autumn, winter and spring offer a more relaxed atmosphere, opportunities to explore the surrounding region and the chance to experience everyday life in one of Europe’s most beautiful coastal cities.

For remote workers looking to balance productivity with quality of life, that combination can be especially attractive.

Free Co-Working Space and a Growing Digital Nomad Community

Through the Long Stay Dubrovnik initiative, the city has been actively encouraging digital nomads and remote workers to spend longer periods living and working in Dubrovnik.

One of the project’s practical benefits is a free-to-use co-working space in the TUP building in Gruž, providing visiting remote workers with a dedicated environment away from hotel rooms, apartments and busy cafés.

The space offers an opportunity not only to work but also to meet other international professionals, exchange experiences and become part of Dubrovnik’s developing digital nomad community.

Regular community gatherings also help newcomers connect with like-minded people and discover more about life in the city.

For anyone arriving in a new destination, having access to a welcoming workspace and an established network can make the transition considerably easier.

More Than a Holiday Destination

Croatia’s seventh-place position in the Digital Nomad Friction Index reflects a broader shift in how people are choosing where to live and work.

For a growing number of professionals, the traditional division between working life and travel is disappearing.

Instead of spending a week in a destination, they are choosing to stay for months, discovering local communities, exploring new cultures and building their working lives around greater geographical freedom.

Croatia is increasingly well placed to benefit from that trend.

And for those considering Dubrovnik, the opportunity is particularly appealing: a historic Mediterranean city, a welcoming international community and a free co-working space to help make remote working a little easier.

Because the best digital nomad destinations are not simply beautiful places to visit. They are places where you can genuinely feel at home while getting your work done.
